CREEDON Patrick
Hannah McCarthy was born 20th of May 1900 in Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland. She married Patrick Creedon who was serving in England with the AIF, on the 2nd April 1918. Patrick sailed to Australia and Hannah followed him one year later. A daughter was born in Perth and soon thev family moved to Beverley. A few months later they moved to Gnowangerup where Patrick opened the first bootmaker business in Gnowangerup. It was in a tiny tin building on the corner of Yougenup Road and Searle Street, which was later occupied by Wally Parnell's Marchinery business. They took up residence at "Eugenup" on the outskirts of the town. Hannah walked along the bush tracks to town for stores. They then moved to a small corrugated iron dwelling in town across the creek from McDonald Street, and later took up a weatherboard War Service home in Whitehead Road where they lived for the rest of their lives. Ron Whyatt: Ron recalls spending time there to watch him work. “He would place the sole on the boot, put 15 to 20 tacks in his mouth and away he would go hammering on the sole. He never did talk much while the operation was going on!” Patrick and Hannah had five children - Julia, Jack, Patrick, Mary and Norah. Mary T. married Peter G. Hewson in 1952. Norah B. married Roland D. Ireland in 1957. There were five children, and when they started school Mrs. Creedon took an interest in P&C affairs. She was later appointed Lady Convener and organizer of the ladies committee. Her personality and natural ability made her successful in all her undertakings for the good of the school and the children. She was a stalwart of the Catholic Church and an active member of the RSL Women’s Auxiliary. Mrs Creedon also supported the Gnowangerup Motorcycle Club by assisting with the food and drinks on the day: “The club is deeply endebted to…Mrs. Creedon”
